Sierra Madre Vineyard: People
Rodolfo Callado, Vineyard Manager
For Rodolfo Callado, managing the Sierra Madre Vineyard is a bit like coming full circle.
As a fruit science major at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, one of the first wines he ever made was from Sierra Madre fruit. After graduating in 1983, Callado developed and operated vineyards in wine regions as varied as Paso Robles, Monterey, and Italy before he joined Mesa Vineyard Management in 2002 at the Sierra Madre Vineyard.
In his 25 years of viticulture work, Callado has witnessed “the maturation of the California wine industry,” and he is eager to realize the full potential of this historic vineyard. “We certainly have the challenges of a cool coastal valley,” he admitted, “but this is obviously an exceptional area for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.” Although this vineyard has already proven itself as a top notch property, Callado isn’t the type to sit on his laurels. “We’ll continue to fine tune our blocks and clones. We are always learning.”
